Introduction

NBA 2K24 was developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports in September 2023 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. As the latest entry in the long-running basketball franchise, NBA 2K24 arrived with high expectations. The series has dominated basketball gaming for years, and many players, myself included, expected another polished simulation that would continue refining the formula. Going into NBA 2K24, I had mixed expectations. On one hand, NBA 2K consistently delivers the most authentic basketball gameplay available. On the other hand, recent entries have received criticism for aggressive monetization and repetitive progression systems. After spending dozens of hours in MyCareer, MyNBA, Play Now, and online multiplayer, my opinion landed somewhere in the middle. NBA 2K24 remains the most complete basketball game on the market. The on-court action is excellent, player animations are impressive, and the presentation often feels like watching a real NBA broadcast. At the same time, certain design decisions occasionally get in the way of what could have been an even better experience. Despite those frustrations, I kept coming back because when the game focuses on basketball, it remains incredibly difficult to put down.

Gameplay

Basketball Feels More Natural Than Ever

The first thing I noticed was how smooth the gameplay felt compared to some previous entries. Player movement appears more fluid, transitions between animations are cleaner, and offensive possessions flow more naturally. In older games, certain actions could feel scripted or predetermined. NBA 2K24 does a better job of creating organic moments that resemble real basketball. Running a fast break, finding an open shooter, or creating space for a mid-range jumper feels rewarding because the game gives players multiple ways to attack defenses. The pace feels realistic without becoming slow.

Shot Selection Matters

One thing NBA 2K24 does exceptionally well is rewarding smart basketball decisions. Players can no longer rely on forcing difficult shots and expecting consistent success. Good ball movement, spacing, and timing generally lead to better results. I found myself thinking more carefully about possessions rather than simply attacking the basket every opportunity. That strategic element makes victories feel earned.

Defense Requires Patience

Defense remains one of the most challenging aspects of the game. Aggressive players often get punished for reaching too frequently or overcommitting to steals. Staying in front of opponents, rotating properly, and anticipating passes are usually more effective. While defensive gameplay still isn't perfect, it feels more balanced than in several recent entries.

Controls

Easy To Understand

Anyone who has played an NBA 2K game before will feel comfortable almost immediately. Passing, shooting, dribbling, and defending remain familiar. Basic controls are accessible enough that newcomers can start enjoying the game quickly. The challenge comes from mastering advanced mechanics rather than learning the controls themselves.

Dribbling Has Significant Depth

Ball handling remains one of the most skill-intensive parts of NBA 2K24. Experienced players can chain moves together to create separation and attack defenders in creative ways. Learning different dribble combinations takes practice, but the payoff is noticeable. Watching skilled players manipulate defenses with advanced moves can be genuinely impressive.

Shooting Rewards Timing

The shooting system continues to emphasize timing and consistency. At first, I struggled to adjust to different player releases. Once I became familiar with the mechanics, however, shooting felt fair and rewarding. Successful jump shots feel satisfying because they require both good shot selection and proper execution.

Graphics And Sound

Broadcast Presentation Remains Elite

Few sports games match NBA 2K when it comes to presentation. Player introductions, arena atmosphere, crowd reactions, commentary, and camera work all contribute to an authentic broadcast feel. During certain playoff games, I genuinely felt like I was watching a televised NBA matchup rather than playing a video game.

Player Models Look Outstanding

The visual quality is excellent. Superstars are immediately recognizable, facial animations have improved, and player movements closely resemble their real-life counterparts. The attention to detail is especially noticeable when watching signature animations from elite players.

Commentary Can Become Repetitive

Although the presentation remains strong overall, commentary eventually starts repeating itself after extended play sessions. This isn't unique to NBA 2K, but it's one area where improvement would be welcome.

Game Modes

MyCareer Remains Popular

MyCareer continues to be one of the biggest reasons people buy NBA 2K each year. Creating a player and guiding them through their professional journey remains satisfying. Building attributes, unlocking badges, and improving performance creates a strong progression loop. Unfortunately, progression often feels slower than necessary unless players invest additional money. That issue occasionally hurts the experience.

MyNBA Is A Hidden Gem

For players who enjoy management and long-term planning, MyNBA remains fantastic. Controlling franchises, making trades, drafting prospects, and building championship contenders provides hundreds of hours of content. Personally, I spent more time here than expected because of the freedom it offers.

Online Multiplayer Adds Longevity

Park, Rec, Pro-Am, and other online modes provide endless replayability. Playing with friends can create some of the most enjoyable moments in the game. However, online modes also tend to highlight some of the franchise's monetization issues.

Final Verdict

Score: 8.8/10

NBA 2K24 continues the franchise's tradition of delivering the best basketball simulation available. The gameplay feels authentic, the presentation is outstanding, and the sheer amount of content is impressive. The biggest problems aren't related to basketball itself. Instead, they come from progression systems and monetization decisions that occasionally interfere with the experience. When those elements fade into the background, NBA 2K24 reminds players why the series remains the standard for basketball gaming. After dozens of hours on the court, I found myself frustrated by certain systems but consistently impressed by the actual basketball. That balance ultimately defines NBA 2K24. It's not perfect, but if you love the sport, it's still the game most likely to keep you playing long after the final buzzer sounds.
