Introduction

Genshin Impact is an open-world action RPG developed by miHoYo, now known globally as HoYoverse. The game was officially released in September 2020 for PC, PlayStation, Android, and iOS. At launch, many players dismissed it as another free-to-play anime game that would enjoy a brief period of popularity before fading away. Several years later, it's clear that prediction couldn't have been more wrong. I first downloaded Genshin Impact out of curiosity. The trailers looked impressive, but I wasn't convinced that a free-to-play game could deliver the same level of quality as a premium RPG. Within a few hours, I found myself ignoring the main story and wandering through forests, climbing mountains, opening treasure chests, and chasing distant landmarks simply because they looked interesting. That's when I realized Genshin Impact's greatest strength. The game constantly encourages exploration. Even after hundreds of hours, there are still moments when I stumble across a hidden puzzle, a secret cave, or an area I somehow missed before. Very few games maintain that sense of discovery for such a long period. While the game certainly has flaws, particularly regarding its gacha mechanics, Genshin Impact remains one of the most impressive free-to-play RPGs ever created.

Gameplay

Exploration Is The Real Star

Most players initially focus on the combat system or character collection. For me, exploration became the main reason to keep playing. The world of Teyvat is enormous and divided into multiple regions, each inspired by different cultures and architectural styles. Mondstadt feels peaceful and welcoming. Liyue embraces traditional Chinese influences. Inazuma introduces danger and tension. Sumeru emphasizes knowledge and nature, while Fontaine brings a completely different atmosphere centered around technology and justice. Every region feels distinct. What impressed me most was how naturally exploration works. If you see a mountain in the distance, you can probably climb it. If a suspicious ruin appears on the horizon, there's usually something worth investigating. The game rewards curiosity constantly.

Elemental Combat Creates Endless Possibilities

Combat initially appears straightforward. Players control a team of four characters and switch between them during battles. Each character belongs to a specific element such as Pyro, Hydro, Electro, Cryo, Dendro, Anemo, or Geo. The magic happens when these elements interact. Combining Hydro and Electro creates Electro-Charged reactions. Pyro and Cryo trigger Melt. Hydro and Pyro create Vaporize. These reactions add tremendous depth to combat. Rather than relying solely on stronger weapons or higher levels, players often achieve better results by building teams that work well together. Even years after launch, creating new team combinations remains one of the most enjoyable parts of the game.

Progression Encourages Long-Term Investment

Character upgrades, weapons, artifacts, talents, and world exploration create a progression system that can easily keep players busy for months. Sometimes this becomes a strength. Sometimes it becomes a weakness. Watching a favorite character become significantly stronger feels rewarding. However, acquiring upgrade materials occasionally turns into repetitive grinding. Fortunately, the game generally provides enough goals to keep progression feeling meaningful.

Easy To Understand

Whether playing on PC, PlayStation, or mobile devices, the controls are approachable. Movement, combat, gliding, climbing, and exploration all feel intuitive. New players rarely need extensive tutorials to understand the basics. The game's accessibility is one reason it attracted such a large audience.

Character Switching Feels Excellent

One of the most satisfying mechanics is instant character swapping. Switching between characters during combat allows players to chain elemental reactions together in creative ways. A battle might begin with one character applying Hydro, followed by another triggering Electro-Charged damage, before a third character finishes enemies with a powerful burst attack. When everything works perfectly, combat feels fluid and rewarding.

Mobile Optimization Is Surprisingly Good

Considering the scale of the game, the mobile version performs remarkably well. Some compromises are unavoidable compared to PC or console versions, but the core experience remains largely intact. That's a major achievement for a game with such a large and detailed world.

The visual presentation remains impressive years after release. Rather than pursuing photorealism, Genshin Impact embraces a colorful anime-inspired art style that ages extremely well. Sunsets across Liyue Harbor still look stunning. Fontaine's underwater environments remain memorable. The variety of landscapes ensures that exploration rarely becomes visually repetitive.

Character Design Is Exceptional

One reason Genshin Impact became so popular is its character roster. Every playable character has a distinct appearance, personality, animation style, and combat role. Even players who disagree about balance or gameplay usually agree that the overall character design quality is excellent. The developers consistently introduce memorable additions to the roster.

Music Deserves More Recognition

The soundtrack is one of the best aspects of the game. Each region features its own musical identity inspired by real-world cultural influences. Whether exploring a peaceful village or fighting a powerful boss, the music consistently enhances the atmosphere. Several tracks remain memorable long after leaving the area where they first appeared.

What initially looked like another free-to-play RPG evolved into one of the most successful and influential games of the decade. Its world is beautiful, exploration remains rewarding, and the elemental combat system continues to provide strategic depth years after release. The gacha mechanics and limited endgame content prevent it from being perfect, but they don't overshadow the strengths that make the game special. The biggest compliment I can give Genshin Impact is that it constantly made me curious. Every new region, every hidden path, and every unexplored area felt like an invitation to keep going. Very few games maintain that feeling for hundreds of hours. Genshin Impact manages it remarkably well.
